P. Diddy’s trip to UCLA on Monday took an unsettling turn after the music mogul allegedly tried to swing a kettlebell at a football coach, according to a university statement. Consequently, Diddy was arrested shortly after 12:30 p.m. at the school’s Acosta Athletic Training Complex on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon. No one was injured, but campus police are still investigating what happened, according to UCLA.
There are conflicting reports of what might have gone down over at TMZ; one says Diddy went to the school to talk to strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi. Sources said Diddy wanted to confront Alosi because his son, Justin Combs, who plays defensive back for the Bruins, was reportedly receiving a lot of heat from the coach at an earlier practice. In this narrative, Alosi is on the phone and tells Diddy to “hang on,” at which point the kettlebell is picked up and turned into a death pendulum. Another source, however, claims Diddy acted in self-defense, shielding himself with the kettlebell after Alosi allegedly snapped and went after Diddy. (Deadspin notes that Alosi doesn’t have a pristine track record, as far as being a coach is concerned.) Either way, the altercation was purportedly caught on video (so keep your eyes peeled for that when, or if, it surfaces).
“I’m thankful that our staff showed the level of professionalism that they did in handling this situation. This is an unfortunate incident for all parties involved,” UCLA football coach Jim Mora said after the arrest. “While UCPD continues to review this matter, we will let the legal process run its course and refrain from further comment at this time.” This is not the first time Diddy has been taken in because of assault, but it is the first time involving a kettlebell. He’s heading to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department Inmate Reception Center for the interim, until authorities figure out the truth.
